Having just returned from Buenos Aires, Argentina, i'm been comparing the beat and heart of this enormous city to that of New York. This part of the southern hemisphere evokes a mystery and warmth very different than the one i live in. the music is everywhere...in the streets, in the taxis, in your head and then ultimately in your body...impossible to ignore!
Even at 3:30 am, yes 3:30 am, there is a very different vibe. Walking home last night at close to 4:00, it seemed loud and very young. in Bs As, it seems secretive, mysterious, and older. especially since half of the tango world is over 50 yrs. It's a world where dinner comes alive at 11:00 or so and you wouldn't dream of showing up to a milonga before 12:00. Dancing with and among Argentina's portenos is the ultimate experience for anyone interested in being woven into the world of tango. you are invited onto the dance floor, showered with complements on your ability to "follow" and then safely returned to your seat (if you are one of the lucky ones to have gotten a table).
Lessons are fast paced and direct, making it impossible NOT to learn. they are also amazingly cheap costing approx. 50 USD for a private compared to 100 USD in NYC. groups are only 15-20 pesos ( approx 6 USD). shoes are also a steel at 60USD. Here they can be 100-250 USD...amazing!!
Aside from the world of Tango, i visited the charming, small and historical town of Colonia, Uruguay and Iquazu Falls on the border of Brazil. You can't imaging the amounts of water before your very eyes and on top of your head. Coming from congested, emissions polluted BA, going to the eco, unpolluted environment of Igazu was striking.
